Vik

Vik is a project in collaboration with Jingchuan Yang. After researching the future of domestic spaces, we realized that our furniture will have to be more multifunctional and adaptable to our needs. We wanted to re-think the stool and make it into something compact and portable within the domestic space.

By combining our experiences and research, my group partner Jingchuan Yang and I tried to combine Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics and design philosophies. Using simple geometrical shapes, we tried to find a shape that would both fit within these aesthetics and be adapted to your preferred sitting (or lying) position. By making a 3D shape out of a 2D one, we quickly moved on with a cone and a circle as our main shapes and eventually developed Vik, which has an inner structure of pressed wool felt combined with a soft foam cushioning on each side and a hemp fabric covering.

Prototyping

Due to the lockdown in Barcelona at the time and the fact that I (having gone back to Sweden) had more tools for making a prototype, I was left in charge of taking the project into reality. Using leftover foam and chicken wire that I found in my parent’s old barn instead of the pressed wool, I set out to make it as close to the vision that we had developed.

In the end, I managed to construct a photo studio in the attic of the barn and shot some ima - ges of how it was supposed to be used and how the strings can tie the 2D shape into a cone (see image 01 to the left), and how they could otherwise be used to tie the cushion to the backrest so that it does not move around while you lie on it
